Jewel of the Seas Greek Isles 2019 - Rome

Image
One of our to-dos for the day was the castle but after eating we were both so hot from the humidity that we went back to the hotel and changed into shorts and checked into our room. After the quick change we headed back out towards the castle. Off on our adventure we go! The humidity was real y’all. my face melted off and my hair quickly frizzed. Living in Colorado I forget humidity sometimes. We paid the entry fee for the castle and in we went. FYI there is a restroom (WC) directly inside the entrance. We got a kick out of Nate trying to fit in this “tiny” guard building. We were initially going to walk over to the Vatican just to explore, but after seeing how busy it looked we decided to pass. Found out later the pope gave mass that day and that’s why. We continued on toward our next destination...another site we did not visit last year  We reached our destination: the piazza del popolo, another place with interesting history. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piazza_del_P...

Jewel of the Seas Greek Isles 2019 Travel Part 2 - Arriving in Rome

We booked our round trip flights through Air2Sea for $700 each! In April I received an email from Maurizio that he was no longer offering ride services but he referred me to another company that ended up being even cheaper for our 4 transfers AND has an easy online reservation system: www.civitavecchiashuttleexpress.com Their website is super easy and I actually got our rides cheaper than they would have been with Maurizio. I made sure to post in my roll call and let everyone else know. In July I decided to check what seats we could get for our DEN-ORD-FCO flights (BA operated by AA). I logged onto AA and picked us our typical aisle for him and middle for me. In August I decided I wanted a little more comfort and checked to see how much an upgrade was. $107 each for 6 more inches foot room, free alcohol and preferred boarding. Hmmmm I thought....I texted Nate and he immediately agreed. woohoo! I’ve never upgraded before...find out next how that experience went. I had prep...

Jewel of the Seas Greek Isles Fall 2019 Travel Day

Wow. Incredible. Beautiful.  These are the words we used when describing last year's visit to the Greek Isles. Would this year live up to the same standard and un-measurable experiences? This was my 7th cruise....7th?! That's not nearly enough. I started cruising in fall 2014 when I made the leap to move from my home in Seattle to where my long distance at the time boyfriend lived in Colorado. He had been cruising for years solo or with ex girlfriends that we will not mention. I had just returned from a DIY land based in Ireland and then pretty much went straight into my first cruise: the Southern Caribbean on Carnival Breeze. If you read my last trip blog you'll know Nate and I got engaged in Sept 2018 in Rome on top of the Altar of the Fatherland in Piazza Venezia. When we got back from that cruise we almost immediately booked for Oct 2019. The price was too good to pass up and we wanted to see everything again. Shortly after we booked this cruise we started thinkin...

Jewel of the Seas Greek Isles - Disembarkation Day & Our Day In Rome Part 2

After spending time at the Spanish Steps we decided not to have a real destination in mind accept to end in Piazza Navona at some point. So wandered we did.  St. Peter's I now wish I would have gone inside this church and I don't even know the name of it. Finally at Piazza Navona We got a table at Restaurante Domiziano right on the piazza here's the view from our table: After eating we wandered further to Camp De Fiore (the open market) which to be honest was not that impressive compared to things I had heard. We continued walking.. Recognize this? That's right..."our" building The original selfie:  we decided to go up these stairs and to our amazement we entered this: I cried at the beauty of it  Drum roll please....we are back at the place it all began... The guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier: We continued walking around, eating more gelato, and made our way back to our hotel.. Nate wanted to rest ...
